How travel has changed my outlook on resilience and change

Ok, you’ve caught me. I have this thing with control. People want the security to know who they are, what they are and where they are. This was a difficult journey for me last year where I was learning A LOT about resilience. It left me with a bunch of questions to fill my “how to survive my life guidebook”. I wasn’t content just saying to myself “This is another thing that is not in your control Jade, let it go!”. I wanted to fight, I wanted to live my life better. But how does one become resilient from all life throws at you? Isn’t that what everybody wants to know? How can I maintain my humour, spirit, growth and integrity… what I inspire to be as an individual when life keeps throwing things at me that I don’t expect? That I don’t think I can handle? Things that make me feel vulnerable, weak and alone?
Travelling, for me, has just been an extension for all of these questions. Whilst travelling has let me experience incredible cultures, food and landscapes, I had intentions for this year to give me freedom and perspective about what I needed to change. But the real experience of travel is resting in the uncertainty of change where nothing ever stays the same. And whilst it bring itself a sense of freedom, it also brings a sense of insecurity which can take a little while to get used to. However, it’s a very healthy type of uncertainty or insecurity, something that ultimately leads to a much happier and content state of mind.
Resilience is not about never feeling pain, anguish, anger, sadness and frustration. Resilience is experiencing all those things and then dusting yourself off at some point and making the choice and conscious effort to keep going.
The reality is that everyday is a choice. If you want to live a full and creative life it is always going to be messy, and hard and glorious and frustrating and wonderful. If we love others – at some point we will hurt, if you are passionate about work and life then at times that passion has the potential to wear you out, make you disillusioned. If you want to be engaged in life than we have to be prepared for the good and the bad. Often travelling is this picture of only experiencing the good however, for me it’s more a picture of resilience.
